A green roof layers waterproofing, root barrier, drainage, and growing medium beneath hardy vegetation, and in our rain-heavy region its stormwater retention is a genuine advantage for managing runoff. We start with a robust, root-resistant membrane and leak-test it thoroughly before a single plant goes down, because access is difficult once the assembly is complete. Plant selection favors sedums and other species that thrive in the Puget Sound climate, tolerating both soggy winters and our drier late summers. The finished roof cools the building, extends membrane life by shielding it from UV, and softens the urban landscape while quietly handling the water our skies deliver.
